Monday, August 12: Rawhead Rexx, “Return of the Dragon”
If nothing else, Rawhead Rexx’s “Return of the Dragon” gave Helloween a good idea of what to expect when considering Daniel “Dani” Löble to fill their latest drummer vacancy, and they clearly liked what they heard since Löble joined the band a couple years after the release of Diary in Black.  The tune actually sounded like a mix of Helloween and Running Wild, from the frantic percussion to Jürgen Volk and Rüdiger Fleck’s semi-speed metal riffing, while Volk’s wailing recalled Tobias Sammett.  In other words, “Return of the Dragon” basically aggregated almost every major German power metal band from the back half of the ‘90s, and on that tip, was fairly successful.  What stood out was Löble’s drumming, which anchored the song while also adding a layer of drama with smartly placed tempo changes.  None of it made Rawhead Rexx a top-tier act, but the song worked very well on its own terms.

Time For the Freedom
I have been hyped to see Helloween for three years, and then of course overly-hyped for the past eleven months since I actually bought a ticket.  I have been waiting and I now only have five more days to wait through.  First, where did all that time go?  Second, my brain is legitimately freaking out.  I’m seeing the band that pulled me out of the darkest hole I’ve ever been in in just FIVE days.

In August 2008, Dani inked an endorsement deal with Paiste and states being extremely happy with his new cymbal setup, which features the new Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash models. and describes them as being warm, full, and ‘sounding straight as an arrow’ with a silvery shimmer.

Helloween - Helloween (Album Review)
(Review #80, June 18th [2021]) Helloween is the self-titled 18th studio album by the power metal icons of the same name. This record sees the return of classic members Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske. The first thing that stood out to me upon learning of this album was it's title. It seems, to me, strange to have a self-titled release nearly 20 albums into your career. Nonetheless, this new release proves that Helloween are still capable of putting out music as good as their 80s output.
Firstly, there is some outstanding vocal work done here. There are actually three vocalists on the album. These vocalists are Michael Kiske and Andi Deris, as well as guitarist Kai Hansen. The best of the three is, in my opinion, is the returning Kiske. His vocal range is absolutely incredible. He sounds especially great on cuts such as "Indestructible." Having Kiske back in the band really adds a certain level of grandiosity back to their sound.

However, that isn't to say that Kai Hansen and Andi Deris are any lesser as vocalists. Both vocalists do some great work with their own respective styles. Hansen does some outstanding work on tracks like "Skyfall," while Deris really shines on songs like "Cyanide" and "Rise Without Chains." All three vocalists' tones differ from one another, making an interesting yet pleasant combat of voices that still manage to harmonize quite well. There is some great guitar work found on Helloween's self-titled record, as well. The group actually have three guitarists. The group's guitarists are Kai Hansen, Michael Weikath, and Sascha Gerstner. All three guitarists are extremely talented and have great chemistry throughout the album. There is some fantastic work and harmonies on songs like "Fear of the Fallen" and "Cyanide."
youtube
Dani Loble is a great musician as well, whose drum work heavily makes up the band's intensity and dramaticism. Loble's outstanding drumming can be seen on tracks like "Down in the Dumps" and "Angels." While Lobel may not be the most well-known or praised member of Helloween, he is certainly just as (possibly even more) essential than any other member of the group. I do, however, wish that bassist Markus Grosskopf got more of a chance to shine. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for otherwise talented metal bassists to get lost in the mix. Grosskopf obviously has the ability to create some great basslines, as seen on songs like "Skyfall." However, he is often outshined by his fellow bandmates. Nonetheless, like any release, the record would not be the same without him.
youtube
Helloween's self-titled release also proves that they are still capable of being incredibly epic sounding, as well. Tracks like "Robot King" and "Out for the Glory" are very monumental sounding songs are sound just as good as anything from their best older albums. The most dramatic of these songs are arguably the 12 minute album closer "Skyfall." The song greatly emphasizes the members of Helloween's ability to create musical journeys. In fact, it may be better than even some of their most epic tracks. Surprisingly, even with it's runtime of over an hour, Helloween's self-titled release doesn't overstay it's welcome. While many similar power metal release become somewhat tiring around the 45 or 50 minute mark, there isn't a second on this release that feels unnecessary or unneeded. Even the short transitional piece "Orbit" is a worthy addition to the album's tracklist. It truly is impressive to see a release like this that manages to stay interesting for it's entire length.
youtube
In conclusion, Helloween's self-titled release is shockingly great. While many bands of a similar style and from a similar time period have tried and failed to make solid comeback albums, Helloween have gone above and beyond my personal expectations. This record proves that the power metal legends can still be as powerful as they did in the 80s while maintaining a level of musicianship that is impossible to deny.

A drawing of Dani Loble that I did for his Birthday last year.
Dani himself liked it and I’m still fangirling over it, despite it happening over a year ago.
